The SWAT team was established in 1978 as a small counter terrorism and sniper unit. Initially administratively belonging to the airport department, and ministerial decree transferred the unit to the department of civil defence in 1982. In 1985 the unit was once again transferred to the special forces. The camp at that time was made up of the Riot Control and SWAT departments, where they continue to improve themselves and serve to this day.
One of the most notable contributers to the establishment of the Special Units is the British SAS. The unit has been instrumental in the training of the Kuwait SWAT unit and has supported many security organisations and departments around the world in training different tactics and specialties, especially after the Munich Olympics massacre and various aircraft hijacking incidents throughout the 70’s arou d the world. The Ministry of Interior has continued to support the Special Units department throughout the 80’s to continue their training by sending them to different countries and gain valuable experience from more advanced units including France, the US, Canada, and Germany.
After Kuwait’s post-Gulf war liberation in 1991 the department restructured itself and continued to train its members and hold joint exercises with the US, UK, and Australian special forces As they were already stationed in the region. This continued up until the 2000’s where the whole world reached a pivotal point in history on 9/11. This lead the Ministry of Interior to boost the readiness of the Special Forces by increasing their participation in overseas courses, joint exercises, exhibitions, and competitions such as Sniper Week and SWAT Roundup in the US and the Warrior Competition in Jordan all of which give an opportunity to gain experience and explore what is new in the field. Some of the specialties in the Special Units department include sniper units, explosive breaching, maritime operation, negotiation, airdrop operations, and infiltration.
The Special Units department continues to develop its capabilities and the people within it as they are the essence of its success in the missions and tasks assigned to it.
